Comparably, The People’s Choice Awards, which looked and felt considerably younger last night, built by 18 percent from its year-ago overnight performance (6.5/10 on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009). Second-place NBC had a typical Wednesday with its line-up of dramas Mercy (#3: 4.4/ 7) and Law & Order: SVU (#2: 6.8/11) and failing The Jay Leno Show (#3: 3.6/ 6). Worth positively noting for Law & Order: SVU was growth out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of Mercy (4.3/ 7) of a hefty 58 percent. As reported yesterday, Academy Award nominee Sharon Stone will be appearing in an upcoming four episode arc of SVU. Elsewhere, two episodes of worthy ABC sitcom The Middle were above-average, with an average (and second-place) 4.9/ 8 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. That led into the best new comedy of the season, Modern Family (#2: 5.7/ 9), which always scores among adults 18-49, and Cougar Town (#3: 5.1/ 8), which reunited Courtney Cox and guest star Lisa Kudrow for the first time since Friends. The ongoing growth for Modern Family out of The Middle makes it a “winner.” All was not well, however, on ABC, with the 10 p.m. time period-premiere of recent Friday occupant Betty at a mere 3.8/ 6 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that finished a distant second behind The People’s Choice Awards, with 75 percent retention out of lead-in Cougar Town. Fox aired two more encore telecasts of People’s Choice winner Glee (#4, average 2.5/ 4 from 8-10 p.m.), and The CW closed the night with repeats of One Tree Hill (#5: 0.8/ 1) and Gossip Girl (#5: 0.5/ 1). Based on final national total day ratings for the week of Dec. 28, LMN reached a new zenith in households (514,000), total viewers (654,000), women 18-49 (177,000) and women 25-54 (211,000). -Top-Rated Nickelodeon:Also based on the week of Dec. 28, and led by SpongeBob SquarePants, the top-rated telecast of the week, Nickelodeon finished as the top-rated basic cable network in total day in total viewers (2.9 million), kids 2-11 (1.6 million), kids 6-11 (986,000) and tweens 9-14 (709,000). Nick Jr., meanwhile, kicked-off 2010 with 631,000 total viewers – its most-watched week ever. -Updated Cable Rankings:What follows are the top 10 rated basic cable networks in prime-time for the holiday week of December 28. Results for ESPN were ignited by the 17.01 million viewers who watched the Vikings/Bears football match-up on Monday. ESPN, in fact, held the top 7 spots this week.
