The family drama has fallen out of favor. Unless, of course, it is melded with other formats. For example, HBO’s The Sopranos wed family drama to a mob story. So it may be no surprise that Sopranos writers Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green are behind CBS’ Blue Bloods, a family drama wrapped in a police franchise, with a bit of a mystery thrown in for a twist.

Premiering Friday, Sept. 24, the series stars Tom Selleck as New York’s chief of police; Len Cariou as his dad, and ex-chief; and Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynihan, and Will Estes, as Selleck’s children—all of whom have entered some form of law enforcement.
