Opposite a night of all repeats on CBS, ABC opened the week on a winning overnight note, beating the encore telecasts on the Eye net by an average of 52 percent. In the distant No. 3 spot in the metered markets was Fox, followed by NBC and The CW.
ABC’s Dancing With the Stars stood well above the competition, with a hefty 10.8 rating/17 share from 8-10 p.m. and growth in every half-hour. Here is the breakdown:
As good as this performance is, and it is very good, Dancing With the Stars has suffered this season by too many contestants and a lackluster caliber of participants. Likely to depart in tonight’s double elimination are Melissa Joan Hart and Louie Vito. Unfortunately, the former Sabrina, the Teenage Witch star is lacking magic on the dance floor. Louie Vito, meanwhile, should never have been asked to participate to begin with (as is the case with half of this season’s contestants). Does anyone even know who he is?
Dancing With the Stars led into Castle, which finished second at 10 p.m. behind CBS’ CSI: Miami encore with a 7.1/12. Retention for Castle out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing With the Stars was a typical 61 percent.
CBS managed to finish second in the overnights despite repeats of How I Met Your Mother (#2: 4.6/ 7), Accidentally on Purpose (#2: 4.1/ 6), Two and a Half Men (#2: 7.7/11), The Big Bang Theory (#2: 6.5/10) and CSI: Miami, which still won the 10 p.m. hour with a 7.6/12. Given these were all encore telecasts, this is respectable for CBS.
Fox took a hit in the overnights care of a Monday edition of So You Think You Can Dance (#4: 3.4/ 5) and 9 p.m. time period warmer Lie to Me (#3t: 3.5/ 5). But since the dance competition always manages to generate some interest among adults 18-49, consider this just “disappointing.” Compared to its normal summer performance, however, it is obvious that So You Think You Can Dance should not be airing in the traditional (September to May) season. In other news, top 20 dancer Billy Bell has left the competition due to an illness and will be replaced by Brandon Durnlao.
NBC had another dismal Monday care of its line-up of Heroes (#4: 3.2/ 5), which needs to call it quits, Trauma (#4: 3.5/ 5), which is just burning off the remaining original episodes at this point, and colossal flop The Jay Leno Show (#3t: 3.5/ 6). One year earlier, former failed 10 p.m. scripted occupant My Own Worst Enemy dropped to a similar 3.7/ 6. How long can NBC waste the 10 p.m. weeknight hour with Jay Leno?
The CW closed this sixth night of the 2009-10 season with its combination of One Tree Hill (#5: 1.6/ 2) and Gossip Girl (#5: 1.4/ 2), which compared to the year-ago night (with the two serials in reverse order) dropped by a hefty 32 percent. While I understand who The CW’s target audience is (young females, of course), from an overnight standpoint both One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl are “losers.” For better rating news for The CW, see Ratings Box below.

-The CW Leads in DVR Playback Percent Growth:
It may not be the most-watched network by any means. But based on the week of Oct. 5, The CW continues to lead the broadcast networks in percent gains from all DVR playback in primetime. Take a look at the Live+7 Day results versus Live-Only viewing in total viewers, adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 for the five networks (listed in the order of percent increase):

-Strong Debut for USA’s White Collar:
White Collar, USA Network’s newest scripted series, debuted with a stellar 5.37 million viewers on Oct. 23 — the best performance in the Friday 10 p.m. ET hour for the cable net since the premiere of Psych on July 7, 2006. Compared to recent series premieres on USA, White Collar in the more competitive month of October outdelivered Burn Notice (3.98 million in June 2007) by 35 percent and In Plain Sight (5.25 million in June 2008) by two percent. Breakout hit Royal Pains opened with a similar 5.57 million viewers this past summer. Results for White Collar among adults 25-54 (2.18 million) and adults 18-49 (1.79 million) were the best in the time period since Feb. 15, 2008.
-Record October for Syfy:
Syfy, the growing home of hit scripted dramas, is poised to finish the current month as its most-watched October ever in total viewers (1.45 million), adults 18-49 (744,000), adults 25-54 (787,000), adults 18-34 (317,000), women 18-49 (364,000), women 25-54 (380,000) and women 18-34 (147,000), Full October results will be available early next week.

-The CW to Repeat The Vampire Diaries:
The Wednesday encore telecasts of low-rated Melrose Place, which have been airing in the 9 p.m. hour since the quick cancellation of The Beautiful Life, will be replaced on Oct. 28 with repeats of The Vampire Diaries. The two-hour season finale of fading America’s Next Top Model will occupy Wednesday on Nov. 18, while feature film Gracie, with Elisabeth and Andrew Shue will step in on Nov. 25.
-Cash Cab Heads to Off-Net Syndication:
MGM Domestic Television has acquired the U.S. broadcast rights to Emmy Award-winning Discovery Channel game show Cash Cab for a fall 2010 debut. Cash Cab will be available to stations on an all barter basis. The premise involves host Ben Bailey quizzing unsuspecting taxi cab passengers on camera.
-Cougar Town Mini-Marathon on SOAPNet:
ABC corporate cousin SOAPnet will air a four-episode marathon of recently introduced sitcom Cougar Town on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 5-7 p.m. ET.
-Expect a Long Night on Jan. 17:
The Office and Extras creator and star Ricky Gervais, who just never knows when to get off the stage, has been named host of The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards. It airs live on NBC on Sunday, Jan. 17 beginning at 8 p.m. ET from the famed Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
-Odd Couple Fans, Take Note:
If you live in New York and like classic The Odd Couple, I have good news for you. WPIX will be celebrating the day Felix Unger (Tony Randall) moved in with Oscar Madison (Jack Klugman) with an 11-episode marathon on Friday, Nov. 13 beginning at 11 p.m. ET. The five and one-half hour extravaganza will kick-off with one of the most beloved episodes of the five year sitcom, “Password.” Remember this?
