Doug Kiel, president of Journal Communications and CEO of Journal Broadcast Group, will retire from the company Dec. 27, 2009. Kiel plans to start his own company, he said in a statement released Wednesday (Sept. 30).

Following Kiel’s exit, Steven Smith, chairman and CEO of Journal, will take over Kiel’s responsibilities.

“We are fortunate to have a very talented cadre of regional and market leaders within our broadcast group, and I look forward to working even more closely with all of them,” Smith said.

Kiel joined Journal in 1987 as vp and general manager of WKTI-FM in Milwaukee, rising through the ranks to become president in 1998. Under his management, the company purchased several broadcast properties, including Great Empire Broadcasting Radio Group, Desert Empire Television and three Emmis Communications TV stations.
