NBC’s upcoming relaunch of Knight Rider, set to begin Jan. 7, may herald the show’s untimely end more than it does a new beginning. After the network picked up the drama for a full season early in the fall, it fired three major cast members and reset the showʼs narrative to more closely reflect that of the original 1982 series. Then, it cut back Knight Riderʼs episode order to 17.

With the show’s prospects looking increasingly grim, the man who has had to deal with all of Knight Rider’s course corrections is executive producer Gary Scott Thompson, who sat down with Mediaweek correspondent Alan Frutkin to talk about the programʼs past, present, and uncertain future.
