U.S. ad expenditures posted their first quarterly increase since Q1 2008, rising slightly more than 5 percent to $31.3 billion in the first three months of this year compared to the same frame in ’09, according to research giant Kantar Media.

The numbers also constitute the largest domestic ad market gain since Q1 ’06, per Kantar.

Even more promising, perhaps, was the fact that 13 of the 19 media types tracked by the firm rose in the first three months of the year.

Among the gainers:

 • Spot TV surged 22 percent, driven by spending from auto, retail, financial services and political advertisers.
