Ice Cream Shop Lands In Hot Water Over Facebook Comment

It’s great when a brand or business on Facebook responds to posts and comments from its fans. However, an errant comment can result in the wrong kind of engagement, as a Montana ice cream shop found out recently. After a Muslim fan of Wilcoxson’s Ice Cream in Livingston, Mont., asked if the ice cream contained pork gelatin, the page manager responded with an inflammatory comment. The backlash has led Wilcoxson’s to shut down its Facebook page.

Here’s the exchange in question, courtesy of the Bozeman Daily Chronicle:

Wilcoxson’s President Matt Schaeffer told the Daily Chronicle that he thought the fan was actually from Pakistan and didn’t mean anything racist with the comment. Schaeffer said he was overwhelmed with work and didn’t really put much thought into the comment.:

I thought he was making this comment from Pakistan. It wasn’t a racist comment … It was just an honest mistake … I apologize if he took it wrong, that’s not what I meant by it. I guess I didn’t read the whole thing.

Schaeffer took down the Facebook page after the comments following his contained so much vitriol. He also told the Daily Chronicle that all of the store’s ice cream flavors are made with kosher ingredients.
