History on Sunday night delivered some monumental ratings, as the opening salvo of the network’s 12-hour, six-part special America: The Story of Us drew 5.67 million viewers.

Leading off with a special introduction recorded by President Barack Obama, the first two-hour installment of America takes viewers back to the nation’s earliest hours, when the unrelenting will of the Jamestown settlers is tested by starvation, disease and the incumbent Powhatans. The episode closes as the country gains its independence from Great Britain.
