Third overall was Fox, followed by ABC, which featured the expanded season-opener of Wipeout, and a night of repeats on The CW. In the battle of the 8-10 p.m. season-premieres, America’s Got Talent on NBC, featuring new host Howie Mandel in place of David Hasselhoff, won the block with a very solid 8.0 rating/13 share and growth in every half-hour as follows: America’s Got Talent (NBC)8:00 p.m.: 6.9/12 (#2)8:30 p.m.: 7.8/12 (#1)9:00 p.m.: 8.6/13 (#1)9:30 p.m.: 8.7/13 (#1) Comparably, this was an improvement of 13 percent from the year-ago season-opener on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 (7.1/ 12 from 9-11 p.m.). The two-hour installment of ABC’s competing Wipeout kicked-off with a respectable 5.3/ 9 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows: Wipeout (ABC)8:00 p.m.: 5.3/ 9 (#3)8:30 p.m.: 5.5/ 9 (#3)9:00 p.m.: 5.2/ 8 (#4)9:30 p.m.: 5.2/ 8 (#4) One year earlier, a one-hour edition of Wipeout opened its season with a similar 5.4/ 9 in the overnights on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 8 p.m. In series-premiere news, Losing It with Jillian on NBC finished third at 10 p.m., with a disappointing 4.3/ 7 in the overnights. While that will still be enough to probably beat both a Tuesday edition of ABC’s competing 20/20 (#1: 5.1/ 9) and a repeat of CBS’ competing (and older skewing) The Good Wife (#2: 4.8/ 8) among adults 18-49, retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of America’s Got Talent (8.7/13) was only 49 percent. That alone makes week one a “loser.” Earlier in the evening on CBS were repeats of NCIS (#1t: 7.3/12) and spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (#3: 6.1/10) from 8-10 p.m., which always resonate in non-originals. Over a Fox, the new season of loud Hell’s Kitchen finished fourth in the 8 p.m. hour, with a 4.3/ 7 in the overnights. That led into Glee, which rose to a second-place 6.8/11 at 9 p.m. -- 51 percent above the 8:30 p.m. portion of Hell’s Kitchen (4.5/ 7). At this point, you can now consider Glee a stand-alone hit. But based on live plus same day results for Monday, May 24 through Friday, May 28, Fox will have no trouble winning the week due to the two-hour American Idol season-ender on Wednesday. Keep in mind that low holiday weekend tune-in will take its toll on the following results once Saturday and Sunday are factored in.
