YouTube Goes Global With Original Content, Launches 60 New Channels

By Megan O'Neill

Since YouTube invested in and began rolling out a slew of nearly 100 new content channels last year, viewers and analysts have been trying to determine whether or not the new original content initiative has been a success.  In a post that went up on the YouTube blog last night, Global Head of Content Robert Kyncl reveals not only that the new original channels are thriving, but also that YouTube is preparing to go global with the initiative, launching 60 new channels in France, Germany, the UK and the US.

So just how well are the new original YouTube channels doing?  Kyncl provides the following statistics:

  • The top 25 original channels average more than 1 million views per week
  • 800 million viewers are watching 4 billion hours of content each month, up from 3 billion hours earlier this year
  • The number of people subscribing to YouTube channels has doubled
  • Partners are reaching 100k subscribers five times faster than they were two years ago

Because of the success the video site has seen over the past year, as they’ve launched their new original channels, they are taking things up a notch.  Kyncl writes, “Given the success of these and the tens of millions of other amazing channels already out there, we still know there’s more great content to find, follow and fall in love with on YouTube.  That’s why today, we’re excited to launch a new generation of original channels coming from France, Germany, the UK and the US.”

The new channels span a variety of topics, from food to health and wellness, sports, comedy, music, news, animation and more and, Kyncl writes, “are backed by some of the biggest producers, well-known celebrities and emerging media companies from Europe and the U.S.”  53 of the new channels will launch immediately with the remaining seven being rolled out in the coming months.  You can check out a sneak peek of what’s to come here.

Now how about learning a little French cooking…straight from France?!
