YouTube Celebrates The Holidays With 3.5 Billion Daily Views

By Megan O'Neill

Back in May, YouTube announced that they were serving a whopping 3 billion views per day with users uploading over 48 hours of video footage per minute.  The world was blown away by this big statistic, but in the last six months YouTube’s numbers have become even more impressive.  YouTube now boasts over 3.5 billion daily views!

Ryan Lawler of GigaOM’s NewTeeVee reported last week that the new 3.5 billion daily views statistic was announced as part of a presentation given by YouTube VP of global sales Lucas Watson at the Monaco Media Forum, on the direction that YouTube is headed.

Watson says, “YouTube is all of 6 and a half years old.  It started in 2006.  And I don’t know if people realize that 800 million people come to YouTube every single month and they watch 3 and a half billion videos every single day. And so, if you step back and think about that rate of change, that’s one video getting watched for every other human being on the planet from a couple of guys in a garage 6 and a half years ago.”

Watson goes on to talk about the meaningful impact that he thinks YouTube is going to have on the world.  “I think that we have one simple and profound goal to consider and that is that we can unlock human progress and innovation by connecting the world to video.”  Art, entertainment, education and information are made accessible and will unlock creativity like it’s never been unlocked before, and Watson provides examples of how this is already going on and what it means for the future.  Check out his full talk below (it’s worth it!) and let us know what you think in the comments below.
