Presumably you’ve seen The Social Network and know that Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook while a sophomore at Harvard. Without knowing that you’d never get the punchline of a t-shirt created by Yale’s current freshman class to commemorate the upcoming annual game between the two Ivy League universities.
The t-shirts use Facebook’s color scheme and fonts, albeit mostly in lower case, to jest that Harvard ought to be called the antisocial network. What appears to be the reverse side of the t-shirt says, “because you don’t get to harvard without being a(n) ___. THE GAME 2010” and a “Y” for Yale follows at the very bottom.
Message to Yale freshmen: Surely you’ve heard of the cliche about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. Does alluding to someone who dropped out of Harvard after two years make the best kind of synechdoche, even if Mark Zuckerberg is the wealthiest former Harvard student? I can’t help but see a lot of envy underlying the joke, although I give major props to the unidentified individuals who actually came up with the t-shirt.
