White House: Twitter Played Role in Budget Deal

White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer admitted to Brian Stelter of The New York Times that the deluge of tweets directed toward lawmakers, encouraged last Friday by President Barack Obama, were a factor in the agreement between congressional Democrats and Republicans on the debt ceiling, announced Sunday night.

Mashable reported that Obama’s Twitter account took a 36,000-follower hit in the process.

Stelter tweeted Pfeiffer, asking if the White House believed the tweets spurred congress to act, and Pfeiffer responded, “yes,” which was then retweeted by Stelter.

Twitter is becoming more of a focus within the Obama administration, as the president announced in June that he would begin sending personal tweets via his account, marking them with his initials at the end.
