The good news? This Tuesday, the United Nations Foundation is encouraging people to take #Unselfies instead.

No, we’re not talking about Uglies (those deliberately unattractive selfies where you have about six chins). We’re talking about a new campaign, #GivingTuesday, where you take a picture of yourself holding a sign that encourages people to donate to charity.

The charity you promote can be anything from your local food-bank to the people working to protect the Amazon rainforest. There are plenty of organizations taking part, so you’re bound to find something you care about.

There’s no reason NOT to take part, really. You don’t have to worry about your messy hair or the dark circles under your eyes – and you don’t have to waste time taking 30 shots before you capture that “natural” look.

If you were out shopping on Black Friday and plan on taking advantage of Cyber Monday sales today, then just think of how much money you’ve saved in the past few days. It won’t hurt to give a little back.

To take part in #GivingTuesday, snap a photo of yourself holding up a piece of paper featuring the name the charity you’d like people to donate to, the web address, and the hashtag #Unselfie. Upload the photo to Twitter, and you’re done.

Of course, the idea is that you donate to that charity yourself, too. And it’s a chance for you to feel good about yourself, regardless of how unphotogenic you are.

You can learn about the participating charities and find out how else you can contribute by visiting the GivingTuesday website. And then you can get back to taking high-angled selfies on Wednesday. Remember to keep that chin up and eyes squinchy!
