Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year? Going to the gym (especially after all that turkey and gravy…) is no doubt a noble goal, as is being more successful at work or spending more time with your family. But it’s also a good idea to include one or two social media resolutions in there – and, just like all your other resolutions, it’s the sticking to it that can be the real challenge.
Your Twitter resolution: what does it look like?
January 1st might be behind us, but that doesn’t mean you can’t come up with your Twitter resolution today.
There are some typical traits of resolutions that can actually be achieved that your Twitter resolution might want to mimic.
First, the best resolutions are specific. Rather than saying “I’m going to go to the gym more often,” you might want to say “I’m going to go to the gym three times a week for the next three months.” Giving your resolution a focus will allow you to actually see when and how you’ve reached it.
So, when it comes to Twitter, you probably don’t want your resolution to be something along the lines of “I will tweet more often.” Instead, be specific: “I will tweet three times a day for the next three months.”
As in the example above, great resolutions also have a timeline attached. This will help you understand when you’ve accomplished part or all of your goal. Just like “I will lose 10 pounds by April” is a better goal than “I will lose 10 pounds,” so too is “I will interact with three new followers each will for the month of January” better than “I will interact with new followers.” Including a deadline helps you stick to it!
And lastly, the best resolutions are the ones that you actually care about. It’s all well and good to say you’ll go to the gym this year, but if you’re not particularly interested in staying in shape, chances are you’ll give up. Maybe a better resolution would be to spend at least three nights a week at home for a family dinner?
In Twitter terms, be sure your resolution is targeted towards your Twitter goals. If you’re tweeting on behalf of your business, for instance, your resolution might include actions that help you earn more share of voice or brand recognition.
How to stick to your Twitter resolutions
Here are a few strategies you can use to make sure 2014 is the year you’ll stick to at least one of your resolutions:
- Tell others. One of the best ways you can stick to your Twitter resolutions is by telling other people what they are. If you know that someone (outside of your own head) is holding your accountable, you’ll be much more likely to stick to that tweet schedule.
- Write them down. A resolution is just a nice idea… until it’s written down. There’s something to be said for seeing your goals laid out concretely in front of you. By writing “I will tweet three times today” on your white board, you’ll have a constant reminder of what it takes to achieve your goals.
- Little by little. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you’re not going to attract 1,000 new followers overnight. But you might just get one or two eager followers every day this month if you are smart about tweeting and interacting.
- Stay positive. If you slip a little and forget to tweet one day, don’t be too hard on yourself. Keep in mind all of the good things you are doing. Keeping a positive attitude will help you stay on track and achieve your long-term goals.
- Celebrate the milestones. Don’t be afraid to give yourself a pat on the back every now and then! If you reach a certain milestone – like achieving your first lead via Twitter or reaching 1,000 followers – celebrate! Rewarding yourself, even with something small, will help keep positive associations with your Twitter resolutions.
