Twitter has signed a deal with music and video technology company Gracenote to make it easier for musicians to get that little blue “Verified” checkmark next to their Twitter name.
Gracenote works with over 3000 major artists, managers, publishers and labels in the music industry, and now they’re offering them a quick and easy way to submit a verification request to Twitter.
A Twitter spokesperson has noted that the artists who request verification through Gracenote won’t be expedited through the actual verification process, which is done on a case-by-case basis.
Verified accounts on Twitter are those whose identity has been authenticated, indicating to followers that the author is who they say they are. Celebrities like Lada Gaga, politicians like Barack Obama and brands like Coca-Cola have all been verified by Twitter.
With the new partnership announcement, musicians will be able to get verified faster, which means we will be seeing more little blue checkmarks in the near future.
It also means that Twitter is likely looking to make the verification process easier across the board. It will be unlikely that it’s ever not done on a case-by-case basis – after all, Twitter does need proof of each account’s identity in order to verify it – but eventually the process to get a big name account verified will be made smoother for those outside of the music industry, too.
And who knows – one day, maybe Twitter will even deign to verify the accounts of non-famous folks like you and me.
