Watch out Netflix, iTunes and Amazon! Today Toys ‘R’ Us has launched its own, video streaming service. The new service, Toys ‘R’ Us Movies, provides over 4,000 family-friendly titles available for 24-hour rental or purchase.
Melodie Warner of the WSJ reports that, “Starting Thursday, users will be able to stream content from ToysrusMovies.com on computers and devices enabled with Adobe Systems Inc’s Flash technology.” While the service is starting out on the web, Toys ‘R’ Us plans to expand to televisions, Blu-ray players and tablets over the coming months. A movies app will also be available on Tabeo, the 7 inch tablet for kids that has been developed by Toys ‘R’ Us.
Senior VP of new ventures at the company, Michael Scharff, says, “At Toys ‘R’ Us, we continuously strive to bring technologies and services to our customers and to extent the Toys ‘R’ Us brand into new areas. With Toys ‘R’ Us Movies, we are able to leverage our valued relationships with leading digital and theatrical partners to provide great services and content we know families will love.”
According to the About Us page at ToysrusMovies.com, the streaming site features movies and TV shows selected just for kids, popular TV shows the day after they air, new movie releases the same day they hit the retail shelves and more. There’s no monthly fee—like iTunes you simply pay as you watch.
It will be interesting to see how Toys ‘R’ Us Movies fares against other major players in the video streaming arena. Do you think you’ll be streaming movies from Toys ‘R’ Us with your kids?
