The Weekly Kickstarter: The Castle Sessions Create Music Magic

Most great music is made through collaboration and, as the constant development of a global community continues to press forward, unique musical partnerships can make for exciting new artistic possibilites. This week's featured Kickstarter project, All I Know: The Castle Sessions, is a documentary that captures an inspiring example of just this effect. All I Know chronicles the joining together of 12 songwriters from across the world as they are tossed into a 16th Century castle in Denmark and work together to create collaborative music in time for a fast-approaching festival performance. The various musicians featured in the film are involved with a project called Nordic Co-write, launched by The House of Songs -- itself an effort to bridge the gap between American and Scandinavian recording artists. The House of Songs is based out of Austin, Texas and functions as a partnership between American and Danish songwriters and producers. Its primary goal is to promote the benefits of crosscultural musical collaboration by finding unique methods for bringing together artists (that would never normally meet) and documenting the outcome of their time creating with each other. All I Know: The Castle Sessions records one of The House of Songs' most recent projects, Nordic Co-write, and is aimed at demonstrating the viability of international collaborations of this type. The Nordic Co-write project consisted of Ida Bach, Anna Bell, Therese Aune, Troy Campbell, Vibeke Falden, Johann Kristinsson, "Scrappy" Jud Newcomb, Matt the Electrician, Roar Amundsen, Nathan Felix, Danny Malone, Brandur Enni, Allan Reher-Langberg and Lara Runarsdottir, all songwriters from countries as geographically and culturally varied as the United States, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. The documentary, All I Know: The Castle Sessions, is directed by Holly Bronko and features an intimate look into the three days of recording and performance that occurred when Nordic Co-write became a reality. Bronko's film demonstrates the unifying potential of music, showing artists meeting one another for the first time and co-writing new material while simultaneously overcoming vast linguistic and cultural barriers in the process. The end goal is a live festival performance and, within this context, All I Know is charged with the kind of urgency that comes when tight deadlines and creativity are forced together alongside all the awkwardness and transcendant beauty of making art with complete strangers. The goal of the Kickstarter project is to raise enough money to showcase the film at this spring's 2011 SXSW festival. In order to properly support All I Know, the project's creators are looking to generate $11,000 for initial funding expenses. Donations will be used toward editing, production (both musical and cinematic), rendering, transferring, equipment rental, festival submission, advertising, publicity and merchandise duplication. All I Know: The Castle Sessions is currently just shy of reaching the halfway point of its fundraising goal.
