Turkey to Facebook: Block Pages That Insult Prophet Mohammad (SocialTimes) A court in Turkey ordered Facebook to block several pages that it deemed insulting to the Prophet Mohammad, threatening to block access to the social network if it does not comply, Reuters reported. According to Reuters, via state broadcaster TRT, the court order followed a request by a prosecutor. The Next Web The decision follows another court ruling earlier this month which ordered news sites that published the cover of Charlie Hebdo featuring a cartoon of Mohammed to be blocked. The BBC reports that Facebook has complied with the order to block a page considered insulting to the Prophet Mohammad. BBC Facebook declined to comment, but it does have a policy of blocking access to content within a country if it breaks local law. Facebook publishes a report of requests from governments around the world for user data. The latest report, which covers the period January - June 2014, shows that 1,893 "content restrictions" were made inside Turkey during that time. The New York Times The court order was issued late Sunday at the request of a local prosecutor in Ankara, the capital. Turkey’s Islamist government has not hesitated to temporarily cut off access to services like Twitter and YouTube for various political reasons, and it often intervenes to restrict content it finds objectionable, despite strong criticism from the West on freedom-of-speech grounds. Daily Mail Earlier this month, Turkey's president began to press for new legislation which would allow ministers to temporarily ban websites, such as Facebook, and force Twitter to block an anonymous whistleblower. Last year Turkey came under international criticism for temporary bans on Facebook and Twitter as a corruption scandal unfolded.
