Facebook followed up last year’s additions of in a civil union and in a domestic partnership as relationship status options with the introduction of new same-sex marriage icons, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation announced.
GLAAD presented Facebook with a Special Recognition Award at its 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco last month.
The new icons will appear when marriages between two members of the same gender are added to Facebook timelines, replacing the man-and-woman marriage icon that appears for straight married couples.
In presenting Facebook with its award last month, GLAAD cited the LGBT-friendly relationship-status options, as well as the Stop Bullying: Speak Up campaign it launched with Time Warner last September, and its addition of content to its help center on how users can help LGBT users who have posted suicidal material and introducing special reporting procedures for LGBT youth in cooperation with the Trevor Project and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
