Tribune Digital Ventures has announced the launch of Newsbeat, its mobile news app which provides audio versions of almost 7,000 stories each day, collected from hundreds of newspapers and websites. The platform mixes human voice-overs with text-to-speech technology to create a personalized news feed for each user, depending on their interests.
Newsbeat users can highlight their favorite publications or topics, and can prioritize certain news sections at the top of their feed. While listening to news audio, users can rewind to listen to items they’ve missed, or skip stories they aren’t interested in.
Newsbeat has been designed with commuters in mind, supporting Bluetooth connectivity in cars, and offering the inclusion of traffic and weather reports so commuters know what’s ahead on their way to or from work.
“Newsbeat offers a new way to experience the best print and online news in a personalized audio streaming format,” said Shashi Seth, president of Tribune Digital Ventures. “We’ve married high-quality journalism from respected reporters and publications with mobile technology to extend its reach and appeal to an audience that is often on-the-go.”
After users highlight their favorite news sources and topics (like celebrities, tv shows or sports teams), the app will become smarter with each use, becoming more personalized with each story the user listens to.
While Newsbeat is available to download for free on iOS and Android devices, the app is supported via audio advertisements, which are inserted into a user’s listening experience. Check back soon to follow Newsbeat on AppData, our tracking platform for mobile and social apps and developers.
