Over the past year, memes have exploded. An awesome new infographic from MDG Advertising analyzes the power of memes, focusing on the life cycle of four of the most popular memes from 2012—Kony 2012, McKayla Is Not Impressed, Binders Full Of Women and Gangnam Style.
The infographic points out that in 2012, “Many of the most viral memes appeared in response to serious issues in politics and business around the country and, in some cases, world. News organizations observed the power of memes, discussing their influence as their popularity rose. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary even included the word in its 2012 Words of the Year list.”
With the growing popularity of memes, there’s no time like the present to take a look at some of the most popular memes out there and to see how and why they spread and, in some cases, why they failed.
Check out the infographic below, in which MDG Advertising takes a look at everything from the controversy surrounding Kony 2012 to the records set by Psy’s Gangnam Style, and let us know what you think. What were your favorite memes of 2012?
