The mobile application universe has come a long way since late Apple chairman Steve Jobs’ 1983 vision of a software-distribution center that would allow systems to be purchased via phone lines.

AVG Technologies director of mobile acquisition Matt Strain created the detailed graphic embedded below, which follows the evolution of mobile apps from Jobs’ 1983 speech in Aspen, Colo., through the information appliance model (2008 through 2010), the home screen era (2011 through 2013) and the current state of apps as service layers.
