Foodworthy has announced the launch of its photo-based food rating app on iOS devices. The app looks to compete with services like Yelp by encouraging users to take pictures of their food at restaurants and review these specific meals before sharing them with the community.

Once users sign up for a Foodworthy account, they’re presented with three main feeds of content for new posts, popular posts and posts from users they follow. Users can filter these feeds based on each business’ distance from the user, whether the location is currently open and the meal’s price range, as well as based on specific restaurant features, including valet parking or wheelchair accessibility, as examples. Finally, users can filter their results based on specific food requirements, like gluten free or vegetarian options. A separate search box allows users to search for specific foods, businesses or people.

Each feed presents images and reviews (where available) in a setup similar to Instagram, allowing users to like or comment on individual entries. Tapping on a meal’s picture brings up more information about the business, including a feed of additional pictures posted there, as well as offering the business’ location on a map and its operating hours, among other information. In addition to following other users, these locations can also be followed.

Users aren’t required to actually review a meal, and can instead simply share the picture (and perhaps other details, like its price range) before posting it to their feed. The app also provides an emoji-based rating system for users to provide feedback on the meal via an emoji.

In a statement, Josh Bernfeld, co-founder and CEO of Foodworthy, commented:

Younger generations are increasingly visual. We have found that people overwhelmingly prefer a good photo with a concise review to a long, opinionated written review. Knowing this, we have produced a powerful app that both users and restaurants love.

Foodworthy is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store.
