The Los Angeles Lakers may have come up short in their bid for a National Basketball Association championship last season, but the team can claim the crown of North American Facebook champion, topping 11 million fans.
The L.A. Lakers Facebook page is currently in fourth place in terms of global sports teams, following European soccer powerhouses FC Barcelona (more than 23.1 million Facebook fans), Real Madrid (more than 22 million), and Manchester United (more than 20.6 million).
The club created its Facebook page during the 2008 to 2009 playing season, offering fans behind-the-scenes photos and video, information on community-outreach efforts, exclusive merchandise deals, and the opportunity to interact with players, coaches, and the Lakers Girls.
Lakers Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Business operations Tim Harris said:
When we created our Facebook page three years ago, we did so with the intention of using the platform as a way to personally connect with our fans not only in America, but all over the world. To know that we are accomplishing that goal is truly gratifying, and we appreciate the support from our fans.
