Everything You Wanted To Know About iOS 4

Today is iOS 4 upgrade day as Apple has made the iPhone operating system upgrade available for download via iTunes. While it seems all iPhone owners are busy upgrading, if you want to get a better understanding for what is new in iOS 4, I recommend Rene Ritchie's exhaustive iOS 4 Walkthrough. (Warning: As I write this the load times for the web site are very slow, which I suspect is due to the popularity of this article.) If you don't have the time to read the entire article, it is worth spending ten minutes to watch Renee's quick start guide, which is a YouTube video. He does an excellent job of showing how fast tasking switching works. Keep in mind, however, that iPhone apps have to be updated to support fast task switching, so not all of your favorite apps may work in this manner at first. I like the fact that Apple provides a very simple way to kill tasks by pressing and holding an app icon, just as you have always done to delete apps from the iPhone. While I am happy that Apple has added folders to iOS, the limitations are disappointing. You can only add 12 icons to a folder, which might not be a problem for most people, but if you have more than 12 games you won't be able to create one Games folder. Even more surprising is that you cannot simply delete a folder, you have to remove the contents from a folder first, then delete it. It appears that unlike Android, which simply creates icons for applications on the home screen, the icons with iOS are for the actual application files so deleting a folder would have the affect of deleting the applications in a folder. iOS 4 is available now for iPhone 3GS and third generation iPod Touch owners, and of course it will be pre-installed on the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, iPad owners will have to wait until the fall to get the upgrade, but if it is any consolation, some of the new items in iOS 4 are already available on the iPad.
