European Union Proposes Law for Universal Phone Charger
Uniform mobile chargers could be coming to the European market as early as 2016. The new law still requires the approval of the Council, but received overwhelming support from MEPs (Members of European Parliament) in a landslide vote of 550 to 12.
The new law would require manufacturers to make devices, or, “radio equipment,” be workable with a common charger. The current proposal would make the Micro USB connector the default charger – a move that could remove 51,000 tonnes of electronic waste every year.
