Emerging top grossing iOS Apps: Blood & Glory, TurboTax 2011 and Smash Cops

Updates influenced the iOS top grossing apps more than anything this week, with Sega, Funzio and Glu Mobile all seeing improved performance on the iPhone charts after updating their apps. Accounting software company Intuit and UK-based Hutch Games both made strong debuts on the iPad charts with new apps. This week's top grossing iPhone Apps Temple Run - Imangi Studios’ free-to-play hit Temple Run spent the better part of the morning battling Backflip Studios’ DragonVale for the No. 1 spot on the top grossing charts, but according to AppData, the battle has been playing out between the two apps since Jan. 3, when Temple Run climbed from No. 11 to No. 2 on the top grossing apps chart. Since then Temple Run has managed to beat DragonVale most days, but it remains to be seen which game will prove to have longer staying power overall. -KingdomConquest- Moving down to the No. 7 spot we have Sega’s -KingdomConquest-. The top selling app in Japan for 2011 according to Apple’s iTunes Rewind feature, the game has amassed over 2 million downloads since release and has more than 1.4 million registered players. The game was updated on Jan. 18 with a first year anniversary campaign that added new monsters and skills. Modern War - Funzio’s Modern War takes the No. 14 spot this week. A free-to-play multiplayer strategy game that monetizes through in-app purchases, Funzio updated the game on Jan. 24 to add the ability to block player comments and made it possible for players to buy new units after leveling up. Players in the game can choose one of six countries to fight for: the US, Russia, Germany, China or Iran and can collect more than 100 different military units. Blood & Glory - Updated on Jan. 24 to add even more blood thanks to two new weapons designed to decapitate an enemy gladiator, Glu Mobile’s Blood & Glory climbs to No. 16 on the top grossing charts, rising from the No. 17 spot it held earlier in the month. The free-to-play game also added new friend bonuses and daily gifts. Minecraft - Pocket Edition - An alpha release lacking in features hasn’t deterred fans of Mojang’s Minecraft - Pocket Edition. A breakout hit on the PC, the game has already seen more than 700,000 downloads on mobile and inspired quite a few copycats, an act that the company’s business developer Daniel Kaplan calls “sad”. A paid app costing $6.99, Minecraft - Pocket Edition, is this week’s No. 32 highest grossing iPhone app. This week’s top grossing iPad apps TurboTax 2011 - With the beginning of the year comes the dreaded tax season, but with it, a handy sales boost for Intuit’s personal finance software and its latest app TurboTax 2011. Currently the No. 3 top grossing iPad app, the app itself is free, but users pay for each tax return they complete with the app. Prices start at $29.99 for a federal tax return and $36.99 for a state tax return. Intuit released the app on Jan. 16. Textbooks - Although many industry watchers suspected Kno, originally makers of a dual screen tablet designed to replace textbooks and now makers of the popular Textbooks app would be hurt by Apple’s recent foray into digital textbooks, so far the exposure has helped the app, pushing it to the No. 5 spot on the top grossing iPad charts. According to a press release distributed by Kno on Jan. 25, more than 95 percent of college students surveyed who used the app found it useful and planned to use it again. Poker by Zynga - Zynga’s popular Poker by Zynga app grabs the No. 12 spot this week. The app was updated on Jan. 17 to introduce bug fixes and stability improvements, but also added achievements and achievement icons, although the game does not support Game Center. The app is free-to-play and monetizes through in-app purchases of chips. Zynga recently made the news when it was reported it was looking into introducing real-money gambling, although at this time its not known how the Poker by Zynga app would be affected if that were to happens. The Daily - News Corp.‘s The Daily is this week’s No. 26 top grossing iPad app, maintaining the momentum that made it one of the top grossing iPad apps of the year. No longer exclusive to the iPad, the app will soon be making its debut on select Android tablets. Smash Cops - Independent London-based studio Hutch Games closes our this week’s top grossing roundup by sliding its new game Smash Cops into the No. 28 position on the iPad charts. Smash Cops is a police pursuit game that challenges players to hunt down criminals in high speed chases through busy city streets. The game features four different mini games and features innovative push controls, rather than a traditional virtual joystick.
