Disney Interactive has announced a large update for its Club Penguin virtual world for children, offering new features specifically for iPad users, and introducing a monthly subscription option for parents.
With this update, the iPad version of Club Penguin has been further designed to offer more of the complete Club Penguin experience. For instance, a world map and selection of new locations including the Dance Club, Clothes Shop and Coffee Shop allow users to interact with others in groups of up to 40 players at a time.
In addition, two new mini-games, Smoothie Smash and Pizzatron, have been added to the game. This addition brings the total of available games to 10. Players can customize their penguin’s looks and their own igloo, as well as watch videos, instantly jump to the same location as their online friends, and more.
To support the growing app, Disney has introduced three subscription options, which vary in both length and price. A single month subscription costs $7.99 USD, a three month membership costs $19.99 and a six month subscription costs $39.99. These membership fees are charged directly to a user’s iTunes account.
“With the launch of the virtual world experience on iPad, we bring with us nearly a decade of experience and investments in safe online play, as well as an audience of millions who have been asking us for a way to play on their mobile devices,” said Chris Heatherly, head of Club Penguin, in a statement. “By offering simple, ongoing subscriptions within the app, we’re making it easy and comfortable for parents to pay for the experience their kids love.”
Club Penguin is available to download for free on iOS. In addition to its monthly subscription options, the game is monetized via the purchase of Penguin Packs for premium content. Check back soon to follow Club Penguin on AppData, our tracking service for mobile and social apps and developers.
