DeNA has announced the release of Lawless, bringing the world of 1990’s Los Angeles to life on mobile devices. Developed by EightPixelsSquare, Lawless sees players taking on the role of a professional criminal, clawing their way to the top of the Los Angeles underworld.
Lawless is an arcade-style shooter, challenging players to complete stages by tapping on the screen to shoot enemies. Stages are split into multiple sections, each with a requirement for completion. Many sections may simply ask players to eliminate a certain number of enemies before moving on, while others may see players eliminating boss characters, shooting down helicopters and more.
Gamers earn points as they kill enemies, with bonuses being rewarded for headshots, moving targets and combo kills. These combos can be triggered by destroying a vehicle or causing an explosion that catches multiple enemies in the blast, as examples. Once players recruit crew members, these secondary characters will shoot enemies automatically, while still earning points and adding to combo attacks.
“Lawless was designed for people that like accessible, pick up and play mobile games with a grittier, more action-packed, photorealistic world to play in,” said Ben Cousins, head of DeNA’s European studio operations, in a statement. “We’ve combined intense action, strategic gameplay and meaningful long-term progression to make a game unlike anything else available on mobile.”
