DanReed650Facebook is turning to an executive from the National Basketball Association to help lead its full-court press for sports partnerships, announcing that NBA Development League President Dan Reed will join the social network as head of global sports partnerships.

Reed joined the NBA in 2004 as senior manager of team marketing and business operations, and he was promoted to NBA D-League president in 2007.

At Facebook, he will report to Director of Partnerships Nick Grudin, who said in a statement:

Facebook is a powerful platform for connecting people with the sports, athletes and events they care about. Dan is a welcome addition to the team, building more meaningful connections, conversations and experiences in this area.

NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum said in a release announcing Reed’s departure from the league:

Dan’s exceptional business acumen and tireless work ethic have lifted the NBA Development League to new heights. We thank Dan for his contributions to the NBA and look forward to working with him in his new role.

Reed added:

It’s been a privilege working alongside so many talented people in the NBA family over the past decade. I take great pride in the NBA D-League’s success to date and its incredibly bright future as both a business and a development resource for the NBA and the game of basketball.
