How To Create A Facebook Username

Over the weekend I was helping a friend with their Facebook Page and noticed that it isn’t very obvious how Facebook Page owners, or even users in general, can create a username on Facebook. As such, I’ve decided to write this brief tutorial on how to create a Facebook username for your Facebook Page or profile. Once you’ve read through this you should be able to easily set one up.

Step 1: Become “Verified”

General Users

Ultimately, a username for both your user account as well as any Facebook Pages you mange is the exact same process. However the only difference is how your profile or page becomes verified. For Facebook profiles, users must verify their account by entering, and confirming their telephone number. This process is relatively simple. First, visit your profile and enter in your phone number within the information area of your profile (found here).

You should then receive a text message with a confirmation code. Once you’ve entered the confirmation code in Facebook and have completed the process, you can move on to the next step.

Facebook Pages

In order to prevent username squatting, Facebook has also created a verification process for Facebook Page. However since Facebook Pages do not require any phone number to be entered, Facebook requires that the page has 25 fans. The quickest way to accomplish this is to simply invite your friends to the Page, however if this isn’t a Page your friends will be interested in, it may take you a while to get to 25 fans. Start promoting your Page around Facebook and the web though, and you should be able to reach the 25 fan threshold in no time at all!

Step 2: Select Your Username

Now that you’ve verified your account or your Facebook Page, head over to Facebook’s username registration page (found here). Within this page you will be prompted to enter a username for your Facebook profile, if you haven’t done so already. Most users however have figured out how to get their profile username, so we’re guessing that you are reading this article to configure your Facebook Page username.

Simply click on the link which says “Set a username for your Pages”, then enter the username next to the Page title as illustrated in the image below.

After you’ve clicked on “Check Availability” it will let you know whether or not the username you want has already been used by someone else. While the username you want may not be made available, Facebook will sometimes make suggestions for alternative usernames. Whichever username you select, you will now be able to access it by visiting http://www.facebook.com/[username].
