Atari has announced the release of Haunted House on iOS devices. The game is a modern take on the classic Atari 2600 video game from the early 1980s, and sees players helping a boy “lost in a scary place” find his way home by avoiding obstacles as he runs through the creepy mansion and nearby cemetery.
Developed by Kung Fu Factory, the team behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run, Haunted House is a side-scrolling experience, and requires lots of interaction from the player. Rather than a simple tap to jump, players will swipe their fingers in all directions, tap on enemies and currency and more to survive.
The world is filled with obstacles, from spiders and bats to leg-grabbing hands and pits. Players must swipe up, down, left or right on many of these obstacles to remove them from the screen, or at least move them out of the path of the hero. For pits, players can drag and drop bridges over the gaps to safely run across them. Our young hero is constantly running through the environment, so players’ reflexes are heavily tested on each run.
Players can activate boosts while running, like temporary invincibility and coin magnets for attracting nearby coins for a short time. Players can take multiple hits before failing the game, and can spend real money on life boosts to keep going even after their health bar has depleted.
“From enthusiasts of the original Haunted House to today’s on-the-go mobile gamers, players of all ages and generations are in for a completely new and fun gameplay experience,” said Fred Chesnais, CEO of Atari. “As we look to celebrate and refresh classic titles like Haunted House and RollerCoaster Tycoon, we will continue to extend fan-favorites to new PC, digital, social and mobile versions, as well as expand the Atari brand to online gambling and other gaming platforms.”
Haunted House is available to download for free on iOS devices. Atari will release a darker, different version of the mobile game for PC later this year. Check back soon to follow the game on AppData, our tracking platform for mobile and social apps and developers.
