Redditors Hatch A Plan For A Gallery & Online Store To Support Art On Reddit… But Is It Feasible?

By Megan O'Neill

Have you ever seen an image shared on Reddit that you wouldn’t mind hanging on your wall?  Have you wished you could support talent on the social news site with more than just upvotes?  One Redditor wants to support artists on Reddit with a new initiative—a gallery and online store where people can purchase prints of the amazing art spawned by the Reddit community.

YoureWrong_ImAwesome posted an idea to the AskReddit subreddit last night:

“I have an idea for all the user generated art that’s on Reddit:  What do you guys think about creating a Redditor generated art gallery/online store so we can buy prints of the amazing art Redditors create everyday?  The money spent would go straight to the artists to support their craft.

“This may or may not have been addressed already but I’ve got to try anyways.

“Everyday that I come to browse Reddit, I see amazing kick ass art created by talented artists/redditors.  Photos, paintings, portraits, doodles etc.  They’ve put hours and hours into their work and what do they get?  Upvotes.  Just upvotes.  And upvotes don’t put food on their table.  They’re getting tons of recognition from us but that’s about it.  We’re not buying their art.”

YoureWrong_ImAwesome’s post has started a discussion on Reddit, currently clocking in at nearly 300 comments, about if something like this would be possible and, if so, how it would work.  Some Redditors, like UNEification, have pointed out the most obvious flaw in the idea: “It would allow people to make money on art that wasn’t theirs.”  Stolen content has been an issue on Reddit basically since the birth of Reddit (read: Redditors Continue to Fight 9GAG, Citing Fake Followers and Stolen Content) and what’s to stop folks from “trying to use this for beer money [from] stealing art from elsewhere on the web.”

UNEification writes, “We would need a picture of each tangible art piece with the artist holding it or holding up verification or something like that.  I’d fear that art drawn on the computer whether it’s a photoshop or MSpaint job would be tricky to ensure that the original artist benefits.”  Ihmhi responds, “Even so, if anyone would be good at outing art thieves, it would be Redditors.”  (Ha!  So true.)

Others ask why this gallery and shop would have to live on Reddit.  There are already sites out there where artists can sell their craft—most notably Etsy and deviantART—and there is even a subreddit, /r/artstore, “for aspiring artists and accomplished artists to link to their stores, show off their wares, and connect to people looking to purchase original art.”  However, YoureWrong_ImAwesome is interested in something more Reddit-centric.  “The way I think about it is that this is for us.  Something that lives on reddit.  Art made by redittors, available for people of reddit.”

Do you think that something like this could work and, if it did, would you purchase art (like this sweet little piece below)?  We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
