Amazing Alex, Rovio’s first non-Angry Birds game in three years is a hit, reaching the No. 1 spot on the paid iPhone and and iPad app charts in 53 countries. Released yesterday afternoon, Amazing Alex costs $0.99 on the iPhone and $2.99 on the iPad.
The results are good news for Rovio, which has acknowledged it was feeling some pressure to make sure its new title lived up to the reputation set by Angry Birds. The game is currently the No. 1 paid iPhone and iPad app in dozens of countries including: The U.S., Canada, Finland, Israel, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and Brazil.
The game is also in the top five on the paid iPhone and iPad charts in some capacity in a further 43 countries such as Austria, Germany, China and South Korea. It has performed slightly better on the iPad than the iPhone, hitting the No. 1 spot in 68 countries worldwide.
However, while the game is a top performer on the paid charts, it hasn’t had as much luck on the top grossing charts. Unlike Angry Birds Space, which shot straight to the top of the top grossing iPhone and iPad app in key markets like the U.S., China and the U.K., Amazing Alex hasn’t performed as strongly. The app hasn’t reached No. 1 on the iPhone or iPad top grossing charts in the U.S., Canada, China, Japan or Korea. It is however, the top grossing iPad app in the U.K., and unsurprisingly, the top grossing iPhone and iPad app in Finland.
At the time of writing, the game hasn’t shown up on the U.S. Google Play charts, but Android app rankings tend to update slower due to the algorithm Google uses to determine its charts. On Android, the paid $0.99 version of the app has been downloaded more than 10,000 times, the $2.99 tablet version is showing more than 1000 downloads and the free version has seen more than 100,000 downloads.
The game is also available in the Amazon Appstore as a free, ad-supported app, a $0.99 paid app and a $2.99 Kindle Fire App.
