Posting to social media is often so easy that users are willing to post just about anything without considering consequences. Social media shaming has led to an industry for reputation management. However, it’s not just the mob you need to worry about, it’s the recruiters searching for your online presence during the hiring process.
An infographic from Jobvite, a recruiting software company, provides insight into just how much social media activity can impact the recruiting process.
It is becoming more common for recruiters and companies to investigate the social activity of potential hires. Currently, 52 percent of recruiters say they always search for social media posts during hiring. 55 percent of recruiters have reconsidered hires based on social activity, and 61 percent of which result in negative outcomes for the potential employee.
The top social sites searched by recruiters are LinkedIn at 92 percent, Facebook at 66 percent, and Twitter at 52 percent.
There are several types of posts that will cast you in a negative light, but there are some that could help your case. 83 percent of recruiters consider illegal drug references to be negative, 70 percent consider sexual posts to be negative, and 66 percent will deduct points for poor spelling and grammar.
65 percent of recruiters view volunteerism and charity posts as positive, while most other behaviours are viewed neutrally. Use of alcohol appears as negatively as it does neutrally, and 69 percent of recruiters don’t care about your political affiliation.
Most of the time though, employers are looking for work and professional information, especially on LinkedIn. Most are interested in length of professional tenure, evidence of professional experience, evidence of specific skills, and industry related posts.
