Latino Political Influence Suppressed by Low Voter Turnout
Many Latinos who can vote don’t, which could be smothering the group’s political power. Research from the Pew Hispanic Center shows that 6.6 million Latinos voted in 2010, a record for a midterm election. However, the number of eligible voters increased to 21.3 million. meaning 14.7 million Latinos failed to show up at the polls last year, also a record.
The number of Latinos who can vote is among the smallest proportion of any group due to the high number of Latinos below the age of 18 (more than one-third) and the percentage of Latinos who aren’t U.S.
