Last weekend I watched Zoolander for something like the 35th time (actually I watched it twice), and I thought to myself, “Man, I wish there was a Zoolander sequel”. Well, ladies and gents, it looks like my prayers have been answered. Zoolander 2 is set to hit theaters in 2012, according to Current TV and a web series is in the works as well. Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films is planning to release an animated Zoolander series, as part of a 2-year deal struck with paramount on Wednesday.
According to Dave Itzkoff of The New York Times, the 2-year Paramount deal will include the animated Zoolander series, as well as another web series called Billy Glimmer: Entertainer of the Century. In Billy Glimmer, Ben Stiller will play a Las Vegas voice impersonator. Stiller is hoping to get Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, and other actors from the original movie to do the voices for their characters in the animated series.
So why has it taken so long for Paramount to realize that the fans want more Zoolander? They want more Blue Steel and Magnum? Well, as Joshua Cohen from Tubefilter points out, the Zoolander movie hit theaters on September 28, 2001, exactly 17 days after 9/11. Sufficed to say, people weren’t exactly in a laughing mood so the movie sort of bombed in the box office. It’s taken 10 years for Paramount to realize the sheer size and force of Zoolander’s cult following. I could not be more excited to see the new Zoolander movie and web series!
Stiller told The New York Times about the Zoolander web series, saying that there is a definite possibility that the animated web show, as well as ‘Billy Glimmer’ could have the potential to grow into future films, television shows or even games. On the other hand, they could just be fun projects through which he can exercise his creativity. “It’s just a way to say, ‘Hey, let’s go do a couple of little five-minute episodes,” he said, “as opposed to saying, ‘Hey, let’s pitch it to the studio and then let’s have a fight over the budget for six months.'”
Stiller isn’t new to the web series industry. He also recently launched Stiller & Meara, a funny web series starring his parents. With Stiller & Meara, Billy Glimmer, and the animated Zoolander series, how is Stiller going to have the time to shoot Zoolander 2? While you are waiting for the web series to launch, whet your Zoolander whistle with the ‘Best of Zoolander’ video below.
