Some places are really good at harnessing the power of Twitter – and others are so GREAT at it, it blows you away.
Take the Weather Channel for instance. They’ve decided to actually harness tweets (for reals) by using them to power the wind speed in the office as it blows (with increasing power) on poor interns trying to do their work.
It’s not only a great idea, it’s pretty fun to watch! (There’s also a live feed.)
Weather Channel interns came up with this idea, it seems – those crazy kids:
Our Weather Channel interns got so excited about Tornado Week they wanted to recreate a Twitter powered Tornado in our office – so we did, and sat them right in the middle of it!
Careful what you wish for though . . .
Now you are in control of the winds. Every public mention of#TornadoWeek on Twitter raises the scale and boosts the winds.
The guy on the right asking for follows (in exchange for posting your name on the wall behind him) isn’t an intern, FYI. Dave Malkoff (assuming that’s him and not a doppleganger intern) is a Weather Channel correspondent. And if you tune in soon, you’ll see his buddy, Paul Goodloe, throwing pieces of paper up in the air like it’s the first time he’s seen wind (he’s a meteorologist). They’re all getting crazy over there.
Probably the best part about it, is watching them talk like anyone can hear them (don’t tell them we can’t, shhh). But DO spread the word and send some #TornadoWeek tweets.
When they hit 1,000,000 mentions, they’ll be turning up the wind to a full blown EF-5 tornado! I have to see that, don’t you?
You can tweet the interns and staff at using the @TornadoWeek handle. I’m guessing the more the wind picks up, the more they’ll do for follows and tweets, so please put that theory to the test!
