Whitney Houston, a recording artist, actress, producer, and model of incomparable talent died this past weekend in a Beverly Hills hotel. The singer has many qualities we’ll miss: her regal beauty, the way she kind of scrunches up her nose when she sings, but most of all, her voice.
Just one line of her impeccable phrasing in “How Will I Know” inspired Brandy to become a singer, and her vocal acrobatics on the “Star Spangled Banner” at the 1991 Super Bowl have put decades of other artists to shame. If you saw her perform live while she was in her prime, count yourself lucky. Even Jennifer Hudson’s glorious tribute at the Grammys last night just couldn’t conjure that strong, clear sound that made Whitney Houston a legend.
Whitney was on everyone’s mind this weekend, as well as their iPods, jukeboxes, and car radios. Out in the street fans played her songs on repeat and hummed along to distract themselves from their grief. The tweets, blog posts, and articles mourning her death have been pouring in all morning, but perhaps the best place to find Whitney today is on Spotify, where her legacy lives on in her recordings. Here are her ten most popular songs on the site:
- How Will I Know
- I Will Always Love You
- Greatest Love of All
- I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)
- Saving All My Love For You
- One Moment in Time
- Run To You
- Million Dollar Bill
- I Have Nothing
- I Look To You
