Facebook continued its focus on groups with a revamp of its groups discovery page, including not only top suggestions, but also open and closed groups their friends are members of, as well as groups relevant to the locations listed on users’ profiles.
Zuckerberg also said in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek that groups could be the focus of one of the standalone mobile applications being created by Facebook’s new Facebook Creative Labs initiative.
And last week, the social network began encouraging group administrators to add descriptive tags so that their groups could be more easily discovered.
Facebook said in an email to AllFacebook that the most common reasons for the creation of groups are:
- For organizations, teams, or clubs
- Keeping in touch with family or friends
- Working on a project, goal, or event
- A shared interest or hobby
- Common identity, beliefs, or experiences
- Networking and professional development
The social network also offered the following tips for creating successful and engaging groups:
- Invest your time: Investing time and attention to the group in the first week helps build a strong foundation. Visit the group regularly and often to create content, engage with members, and provide a model of behavior for others to emulate.
- Personalize your group: Help your group stand out and attract the right members by adding logos, cover photos, and descriptions that appeal to potential members.
- Spread the love: Appoint multiple administrators to help recruit new members and make connections outside of your circle.
- Customize your group’s privacy setting: You can select one of three privacy options for each group you create: open, closed, or private. By selecting closed or private, you’re more likely to attract active and interested users.
