Researchers Sent a Text Message With Vodka and a Fan

Who needs a smartphone when you can send a text message with vodka and a fan? At least, that was the question I was left with after reading about a recent project from researchers at York University. It’s not too different from smoke signals, but it’s not entirely different from drunk texting either, albeit a bit more scientific.

For the experiment, the team encoded the alphabet in evaporated alcohol which was shot across the room using a fan, then decoded using a receiver.

It’s a form of molecular communication – the same kind of system that plants and animals might use.
