More than 200 local subreddits are organizing events to give back to their communities are part of a global day of service.

reddit-imageWhen it comes to altruistic tech companies, reddit might not be top of mind, but the social-bookmarking site is doing some good things. Just a few weeks ago, co-founder Alexis Ohanian announced a book tour to talk to college students about entrepreneurship. Turns out this tour launches just a couple days after reddit’s second annual global day of service.

“It’s a day where people gather and do volunteer or service activity in their local communities (and then, usually, go drink),” says the announcement.

More than 214 local subreddits have already schedule events in their communities on October 5, 2013, including Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Hawaii, London and Bangalore.

“Birmingham, AL is getting together to help clean up a local nature preserve, Orlando is volunteering at a local Ronald McDonald House to help families of sick children, and Washington, DC is helping a local food bank.”

For those interested, you can check for an event in your area. If you’re planning an event and your subreddit isn’t listed, alert the mods and the organizer at reddit will update the list.

Happy service day!
