Pokemon Go Is Turning One in July and Celebrating With Special Events

Niantic will host both in-game and real-world events around the world this summer

Niantic announced a series of in-game and real-world Pokemon Go events taking place this summer in celebration of the game’s first anniversary in July.

To start, an in-game Solstice Event will begin at 1 p.m. PT June 13 and it will run until 1 p.m. PT June 20. During this event, players will have increased encounter rates of Fire- and Ice-type Pokemon, and they’ll also earn extra experience points when they achieve special Poke Ball throws when capturing Pokemon (Curveballs, Nice Throws, Great Throws and more). Finally, during this event, Lucky Eggs will be 50 percent off in the game’s store.

Next, Niantic revealed Pokemon Go Fest, a real-world event taking place in Chicago July 22. The event will be held in Chicago’s Grant Park, and it will give players the ability to “meet fellow players and engage in a variety of activities.” Tickets for Pokemon Go Fest will go on sale June 19 at 10 a.m. PT.

Finally, Niantic revealed a series of worldwide events that will take place throughout the summer. To start, Niantic will host special Pokemon Go celebrations across Europe in partnership with Unibail-Rodamco shopping centers. These events will be held from June through September.

Next, North American players will be able to participate in events in “several cities” across North America, thanks to Niantic and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation‘s partnership on the Open Streets program.

Finally, The Pokemon Company will hold “Pikachu Outbreak,” a Pokemon-themed event in Yokohama, Japan, in August.

Alongside these announcements, Niantic revealed that it partnered with Wieden+Kennedy London to launch a campaign celebrating the game’s activity in major worldwide locations. As part of this campaign, billboards containing gameplay stats will appear in New York, London and Tokyo, and many of these billboards will also be activated as PokeStops within the game.

Pokemon Go is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store and Google Play. The game has been downloaded more than 750 million times.
