A new infographic from Microsoft Azure Mobile Engagement reveals the do’s and don’ts for developers utilizing push notifications to reach their users. While push notifications can keep users engaged, the infographic claims few companies use them correctly.

Developers are encouraged to avoid sending generic push notifications to every user. By sending personalized notifications instead, companies can see their conversion rate improve by up to 300 percent.

In addition, companies should keep in mind opt-in rates for receiving push notifications can vary, depending on the app type. For example, travel and transportation apps have a 78 percent opt-in rate, while medical, health and fitness apps have a 35 percent opt-in rate.

Elsewhere, the infographic said companies should send notifications at the right time for their consumers. Specifically, the delivery time of push notifications can influence engagement rates by up to 200 percent.

Finally, developers must avoid sending too many messages to their users, as 46 percent of consumers said they would turn off an app’s push notifications after receiving two to five notifications in a week.
