Periscope has a slight edge over Meerkat in the fight for users among the two fledgling live-video-streaming applications.

GlobalWebIndex found that 1 percent of Internet users between the ages of 16 and 64 who were surveyed use Periscope, compared with 0.9 percent for Meerkat, showing that both apps have their work cut out for them.

When broken out by age group, Periscope led among respondents 16 through 24 and 55 through 64, while the other three age groups went to Meerkat—25 through 34, 35 through 44 and 45 through 54.

GWI said in an email to SocialTimes:

Overall, Periscope has the (albeit slender) lead over Meerkat. But that both are being used by a tiny minority shows how much work needs to be done before this type of app captures the attention of the mainstream audience.

Equally striking is the different age distribution of users. While both apps have the bulk of their users in the 16-through-34 demographic, Periscope has a much bigger share in the all-important 16-through-24 age group–something that gives it an edge as the two apps continue to go head-to-head.
