The 2010 Winter Olympics get underway today in Vancouver, British Columbia, and the PR departments of many major brands, including event broadcaster NBC are working overtime to ensure everything goes smoothly during the games.
Some of the stories the NBC PR team have been pushing include the Games’ digital partners and offerings, the network’s talent roster covering the games and a contest to design the helmet of U.S. skier Lindsay Vonn.
PRNewser has learned NBC is not working with any outside agencies to promote the games. However, agencies including Porter Novelli, Golin Harris, Edelman, Waggener Edstrom, Taylor PR and Fleishman-Hillard are all working with clients in Vancouver.
Edelman said their clients at the games include GE, 24 Hour Fitness, Petro Canada, International Paralympic Committee, Hudson Bay, and Oakley.
While the Olympics are always a PR and marketing bonanza, one agency rep told PRNewser, “Overall, I think the winter Olympics are less appealing globally from a marketing stance – the entire southern hemisphere that doesn’t have many athletes competing are less interested.”
