‘Nothing More than Dust Jackets for Books’: Tumblr Users Remember Ray Bradbury with Book Covers

Ray Bradbury once wrote that "We're nothing more than dust-jackets for books, of no significance otherwise." The author of Fahrenheit 451 and other science fiction classics passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91. More than a few book lovers in the Tumblr community lamented the news, but in true photo-blogging form, they said it with Instagram. Now Tumblr has all the dusty charm of the sci-fi section at a used bookstore.

Ray Bradbury once wrote that “We’re nothing more than dust jackets for books, of no significance otherwise.” The author of Fahrenheit 451 and other science fiction classics passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91.  More than a few book lovers in the Tumblr community lamented the news, but in true photo-blogging form, they said it with Instagram. Now Tumblr has all the dusty charm of the sci-fi section at a used bookstore.

Through their Tumblr photos the readers revealed not only which books were their favorites, but how long the copies they read were in circulation. Some were dog-eared and worn, while others looked brand new.

The posts were synched with the conversation on Twitter, where readers gathered around the hashtag #raybradbury to mourn the loss of a literary gem.

Other members used tags to place the book covers in different design genres and eras.

The cover art is lovely, isn’t it?

This reader even got a snapshot of some of the text, most likely using an Instagram filter to highlight one passage and blur out the rest.

The line about the smile is especially poignant. And as long as readers remember him, Ray Bradbury will never go away, either.
