Volkswagen’s ‘The Force’ Super Bowl commercial, starring Little Darth Vader, was one of the most successful ad campaign of all time, garnering over 36 million YouTube views in three months. Now Marvel is capitalizing on VW’s success with a new parody campaign for their upcoming movie Thor, starring Little Thor. Little Thor is already approaching the 1 million-view mark, and it’s only been a week.
The Little Thor campaign copies ‘The Force’ ad to a T—Little Thor walks down a hallway wielding Thor’s hammer, he tries to use Thor’s Hammer on a stationary bike, on a dog, on the washing machine, on a doll, on a sandwich…nothing happens. But, when he tries to use the hammer on his father’s car…well…you’ll just have to check out the video below to see what happens!
Thor hits theaters on May 6 and this is definitely an amazing way to promote it. Creating parodies of successful campaigns is certainly a roll of the dice—for instance, we’ve seen successful Old Spice spoofs and not-so-successful ones—but Marvel really hit the hail on the head with this VW spoof. You could say they hit the nail on the head with Thor’s hammer, tee hee hee.
What do you think about Little Thor? How does he compare to VW’s Little Vader and what is your opinion of parodies as advertising in general?
