I’ll Have Another is Out So Who Cares About the Belmont Stakes?

Our Triple Crown hopes are dashed because I’ll Have Another won’t be racing.

If you’re anything like me, you didn’t know until this morning that the Belmont Stakes is happening tomorrow or that I’ll Have Another was in Triple Crown contention. But then I saw this segment on the TODAY show and I was like, “Hmm, maybe I should make a plan to be somewhere to watch this race! History could be happening!” Now I’m back to kind of not caring.

Perhaps not everyone was as clueless as I, but there’s a good chance that without the much-hyped Triple Crown possibility, there are others who have been deflated by the news. Daily Racing Form says the record for Belmont Stakes attendance was set in 2004 when the Triple Crown was last on the line. (Smarty Jones didn’t win.) The Triple Crown was last on the line in 2008, when Big Brown was in the race. (Thanks for the correction Jeremy Bridgman.)

“The Belmont Stakes is still an iconic event on the sports schedule, and the NBC Sports Group broadcasts will treat it as such. We’re working now to adjust the game plan accordingly,’” the site quotes NBC spokesperson Adam Freifeld.

Dullahan is now the favorite to win. Others are saying Paynter or Union Rags. Perhaps it’s worth tuning in to see who wins after all.
